A new container terminal opening central Somalia and south-eastern Ethiopia to Gulf and Asian trade routes. Rock-fill breakwater, armour revetment, precast quay blocks and two operational berths, with two more under construction to bring the port to 1,445 m.
Garacad Seaport is the first deep-water port on Somalia's central coast. It was planned to open central Somalia and south-eastern Ethiopia to trade routes towards the Arabian Gulf and Asia, cutting long overland journeys to distant ports.
Building a port on an exposed ocean coast starts with the breakwater. Its core was built from rock of 10 to 400 kg, protected by underlayers of 0.4 to 2 t and a primary armour layer of 4 to 6 t rock and precast antifer blocks of 9, 12 and 15 t, topped by a concrete crown wall. On the sheltered side, precast quay blocks were set on an enrockment foundation and capped with an in-situ beam, then fitted with fenders, bollards, ladders and mooring rings.
Berths A (133 m) and B (141 m) are in operation. Berths C (320 m) and D (300 m) have been added to the design, bringing the port to 1,445 m and the revised contract to USD 101.7 million, with Rendel and Ingerop as consultants.
This project was delivered by TTN Construction, SOTEC's partner. It is shown to illustrate the joint capability available to clients.
